ABOUT THE SHOW:
Chicago – ORBIT, 1350 W. Erie Street is pleased to present Let the Game Come to You, an exhibition of process paintings by Dimitri Pavlotsky. The exhibition begins with an opening reception, Friday, November 30 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. with artist’s remarks beginning at 7:00 p.m. Pavlotsky is known in the Chicagoland area for his expressive and passionate renderings on canvas, which oftentimes evoke a deep and powerful response from the viewer.
The artist joined by musician, Brad Robin will collaborate in an interpretive live painting and music performance on Sunday, December 9 at 2:00 p.m. The performance is free and open to the public.
The artist states:
I paint quickly: speed grabs essence better than deliberation. I would rather stick with gut reactions than pursue an analytical process. It’s mostly about moving energy, which is always alive and moving. Speed takes me past my own thinking where I can easily get bogged down in concepts and ideas. I let my hand tell the story. For me, the process of art making is discovering the non-verbal truth of the present moment.
Since my classical training is rooted in figurative tradition, my gestures naturally add up to an image of a body or a portrait. But those are not illustrations of features. The images are always about the interior landscape of my own emotions at a given moment. I am an expert in internal conflict. So, I put it on display in my art. Look for doubts, indecision and mistakes in my art. All underwritten by an inescapable urge to leave marks on a surface. My art heals me. The process is highly intuitive. I never know the resulting image in advance. Even if I plan the composition, I change it many times during the process beyond recognition. All I know is the one next move, next color, and next line.
About the Artist
Artist Dimitri Pavlotsky grew up in Moscow, Russia and has been based in Chicago since 1994. In Russia, he received a rigorous traditional academic education. He felt limited to his technical abilities, which were favored by the culture, over his desire to explore a more emotive and fuller means of expression. He was introduced to modern art while studying architecture in Moscow and later expanded that exposure while attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. This allowed Pavlotsky to immerse himself in the possibilities of experimenting with visual languages. Pavlotsky received an MFA degree at Moscow Institute of Architecture in 1986 and has been the recipient of several prestigious national design awards.
Pavlotsky recently left his architectural career to concentrate fully on his studio practice of painting. His most recent solo exhibitions include “Dissonance” at Gallery Studio Oh! (2015), “Every Single Line Required” at Gallery Krug (2017), and “Raw Emotion” at Harold Washington Library Center (2017). He has also exhibited at Sutter Street Gallery in San Francisco, Chicago Artist Coalition, Jackson Junge Gallery, and Spertus Institute in Chicago among others. He has volunteered as an art instructor at Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago. He is a member of Dialogue Chicago, a professional artists critique forum.
