This Fall, The International Museum of Surgical Science (IMSS) opens its Thorek Medical Manuscripts and Rare Books Collection for 3 Book Conservation Workshops, bringing together 12 volunteers per session interested in basic conservation principles, condition reporting, cataloging and applied conservation. Under the direction of the IMSS Curator, Monica Stokes, Thorek Library Conservation Intern Tannaz Motevalli and using methods developed for the Museum by London-based conservation enthusiast Laura Chaillie, volunteers will be given unprecedented access to over 1,000 rare books to log and “soft pack” for long-term storage.

All workshops are held on Sundays from 10AM-4PM. Dates include: 8/12, 9/9, and 10/7

With these workshops, IMSS seeks to emphasize the Museum as a leader in creative solutions to core problems facing collections at organizations of its type and scale while creating opportunities to educate the public and invest in Chicago’s community of museum enthusiasts by teaching from its collections.

This program is free and open to 12 committed volunteers per session. Registration opens on a first-come, first-serve basis. Volunteers who register are commiting to volunteer for the full 10AM-4PM day.

Access to a Smart Phone is required (free WiFi is provided)

A light breakfast is provided. Volunteers break for lunch and are encouraged to bring their own midday provisions.
