PN76: North Lawndale’s Restorative Justice Court, One Year Later

One year ago, an experimental court on Chicago’s West Side using peace circles instead of judges and juries opened its doors. The Restorative Justice Community Court brings young adults in North Lawndale and Garfield Park face-to-face with their victims and neighbors. It is part of a community-led effort to keep 18- to 26-year-olds from the neighborhood with non-violent criminal histories out of jail and “restored” back to community.
Join City Bureau reporting fellows Jenny Casas and Sarah Conway and Free Spirit Media’s The Real Chi criminal justice reporter Elijah Walker for a look at the restorative justice court on its one-year anniversary. The evening will feature a panel and discussion on what role restorative justice has played in alternatives to the traditional criminal justice system. Then attendees will participate in a hands-on audio production activity.
