FARMLANDIA: New work by Christopher Schneberger
There is a vast expanse of farmland to the south and west of what is known as “Chicagoland.” This fertile land, ground flat by glaciers, allows one to gaze for miles from just a few feet above the ground. The people and homes in this rural region are separated by great distances, both physical and cultural. Christopher Schneberger has been photographically investigating these farmscapes in winter, with their crops harvested, the soil bared, and with a ceiling of sullen cloud-drift above.
In the Farmlandia series, Schneberger continues the themes of loneliness and isolation which are also present in his narrative tableaus. The series is still somewhat new and evolving. At this point the works are presented in a large scale, cinematic aspect ratio, and framed without glass to give the viewer a more immediate and immersive experience.
Farmlandia is on display August 30 thru September 30, 2018. An opening reception will be held on September 1 from 5-7 p.m. A conversation with the artist is scheduled for Thursday, September 13 at 7 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.
