A discussion of anarchism through the literature of Lucy Parsons, a woman of color, labor organizer, radical socialist, anarchist communist and powerful orator. The Catholic Worker is an anarchist movement, believing that government cannot and will not solve our problems. Rather, people acting in love will take care of each other’s needs. In considering what this powerful anarchist saw in the state violence of her day which ultimately killed her husband in connection with the Haymarket Riots, we can better understand how to respond to the present struggle with our troubled and systematically unjust government, in order to together envision a better and freer future where, as Catholic Worker co-founder Peter Maurin might say, “it is easier to be good” because we take responsibility for the good we are able to do.
