Abandoned Practices
@ School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Columbus Drive Building
280 S Columbus Dr, #012, Chicago, IL 60603
Opening Wednesday, July 25th, from 1PM - 3PM
Sixteen participants of the three-week summer course devoted to abandoned practices and endangered uses have been engaged in research, performance, installation, and writing projects, with teachers Matthew Goulish, Lin Hixson, and Mark Jeffery, teaching assistant Christopher Huizar. This year’s visiting scholars were Erin Manning and Ryan Tacata.
You are invited to attend presentations on Wednesday, July 25 @ 1PM, Columbus Building, 012(basement), devised in response to the form of the Chautauqua Assembly, a traveling rural adult education institution, the popularity of which peaked in the late 1800s. Sharing the theme of useful knowledge, the three 15-18 minute presentations each weave a series of strictly timed original responses to subjects such as “Moving Sidewalk,” and “Acoustic Location” in alternating presentational modes of expert demonstration, traveling exhibition, entertainment performance, misremembered fabulation, and the “occasional poetry” of the toast.
