Bio:
Aaron Walker is an artist, self-publisher, and organizer whose projects often germinate from an active interest in localized, independent artist-run communities and the systems of support formed within.
Aaron co-authors projects that involve and highlight individuals whose work is often taken for granted, done behind the scenes, or in support of others. This has included collaborations with social service providers, session musicians, street paper vendors and line cooks.
Description:
Public signage is erected and sometimes forgotten as new relationships towards a city are conjured and then enforced. Looking to the idiosyncratic syntax of signs that have outlived their initial didactic function, The Unsanctioned Sign Company publishes sign texts that hover in between public commemoration, private intervention and personal advertisement. Taking the ubiquitous form of city wayfinding signage, sandwich boards, and yard signs, these guerrilla texts add jokes, non sequiturs, musings and missives to the landscape. Past sign writers have included Kelly Lloyd (pictured), Jesse Malmed, Chris Little, Yvette Nepper and Aaron Walker.
As part of Public Space Camp, representatives from the USC will lead “The Sign Game Workshop,” an informal public sign writing and fabrication session, in which easily deployable signs will be created over the course of an afternoon. Upon completion, participants will be encouraged to install their signage in the public space of their choosing.
