This program will highlight two Latin American documentaries, Palenque (25 min.) from Colombia & The Joy of Sound / La Felicidad del Sonido (60 min.) from Panama. Through gorgeous cinematography, music and sounds, these films depict the history, the people and cultural traditions of the two Latin American towns.

Through a series of outlandish characters, The Joy of Sound takes the viewer on a voyage of the senses, as it reflects on nature, communal life, solitude and silence.

About Maria Lopez: A cinephile with a strong affinity for Latin American films, Maria has been a film programmer at the Chicago Latino Film Festival since 2010. Maria has traveled to Peru, Paraguay, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile to attend festivals and scout films to bring to the Chicago Latino Film Festival. She spent a month working as a theater manager for the International Film Festival in Asuncion, Paraguay. She has also programmed and hosted a short film collection for the CAN-TV series Cine Latino: Festival of Short Films and also programmed a collection of Latin American shorts for WTTW- Channel 11. She also served as a jury member for the 10th edition of the UVAQ Festival de Cortometraje Universitario in Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico in June of 2017.
