Peter Broitman – Bio

Peter began painting full time in 2012 after thirty-one years working as an attorney for the United States Department of Labor. Peter’s father was a painter (figurative and abstract) who went to Cooper Union Art School in the late 1930s. Peter grew up in a house filled with his father’s paintings (one of which is featured in the show), and his teenage and young adult years were spent discussing art and the artistic process with him. After his father passed away too early in 1984, Peter continued his discussions about art and the artistic process with his daughters who are artists in their own right.

The Show

The show is dedicated to Peter’s daughter Jocelyn. A car hit Jocelyn last July 4th when she was crossing Fullerton at Kedzie. She suffered multiple injuries, including traumatic brain injury, but because of her strength and determination, Jocelyn has made great progress in her recovery. A portrait of Jocelyn based on Peter’s favorite photo of her is included in the show. Drawings of people on the NYC subway drawn by Peter’s other daughter Katie are the inspiration for the show, which features 5 paintings set on the El. A selection of Katie’s drawings is included in the show. All of Peter’s paintings are based on photos taken by him, his wife or by Peter’s friends, as well as photos in newspapers and magazines and photos from Google Image. Each painting in the show is displayed with the photos Peter used.
