Kunz Extended: Jazz X-tet Performance
@ Hyde Park Art Center
5020 S Cornell Ave, Chicago, IL 60615
Opening Sunday, April 8th, from 12PM - 1:30PM
A special performance led by legendary jazz musician Mwata Bowden and the jazz musicians from the University of Chicago’s jazz ensemble, Jazz X-tet, activates Anna Kunz’s immersive installation in Gallery One. Working in collaboration, Bowden and Kunz explore the connections between improvisational painting and music. Moving through Gallery One, visitors will find musicians integrated amongst Kunz’s installation. By extending the experience of Kunz’s work to include music, this collaborative performance or gallery activation invites visitors to explore the intersections between sonar and visual experience.
The UChicago Jazz X-tet is known for its boldness in showcasing cutting-edge works, going well beyond the usual repertoire of a university big band. The X-tet is a versatile collection of 12 to 15 UChicago undergraduate and graduate student musicians, frequently joined in performance by noted Chicago-area professionals. The Jazz X-tet’s three-concert season offers a variety of pieces that range from jazz standards to hip-hop, often in arrangements that are custom-designed for the ensemble by its own members. Original compositions by present-day composers are featured in the final concert of the year. Both in rehearsal and in performance the X-tet focuses on developing the improvisational skills of its members. The group has issued two CDs, and frequently performs for University events and elsewhere in the city. Jazz X-tet performances are free!
