A devotion to truth.
Courage to stand and fight in the mist of the storm.
A conviction and burden that is fueled by love of the people.
These are a few of the attributes that define a true hero. In this powerful new exhibition, the artists pay homage to not only individuals, but to communities and moments where great examples of strength and courage have been a trans- formative light within the chaos of our times. These works also examine the idea of a distinctive practice of heroism in our society which combats the mind-numbing sensory manipulation that bombards us daily and connects to an ongoing historical campaign of lies and false narratives. They have fanned the flames of hatred and injustice in this country for over 400 years.
Hero•ism is more than just a celebration of the artists’ personal heroes; it is also a visual investigation around the notions of self-identity, inner-power and outer-purpose. What is our calling in these times? Are we willing to sacrifice enough and to love enough to become heroes ourselves?
