Mar 2nd 2018

Studio Archive Services (SAS) will be hosting Average/Evening, a living room art auction, on Friday, March 2, in response to the School of the Art Institute (SAIC) Beautiful/Night alumni auction. While SAIC’s gala generously benefits student scholarships, SAS’s Average/Evening includes work by Chicago artists who will receive 100% of the profit from sales in order to support their practice.

There are twelve artists auctioning off work at the event, including early, mid, and late career artists ranging in age from mid 20s to early 80s. The work for auction includes painting, drawing, prints, artist books, and sculpture. The artists include: Kayla Anderson, Elena Ailes, Nick Ferreira, Danny Floyd, Kara Jefts, Stephanie Lu Jokich, Brian T. Leahy, Antonio Francisco Lopez, Rebecca Lothan, Corinne Peterson, Mitsu Salmon, and Kevin Stuart. Six of the twelve artists are also SAIC alumni.

The intention of Average/Evening, a living room art auction is not only to provide an encouraging environment for Chicago artists to sell work, but also, it is intended as a space where Chicago collectors who are uninterested in or unable to pay a $400 entrance fee to SAIC’s gala can invest in work and support local artists. There is no entrance fee for the auction sponsored by SAS, and starting bids for the artwork included will range from $10.00 to $100.00.

Average/Evening doubles as a performance event. A simple set and props will be arranged to make it easy for the audience to parody the elite SAIC occasion. The auctioneer, Betty Vegas, is a veteran organizer of parody events. Vegas was director and host of the annual Betty Awards from 2010-2013, a red carpet style award show held at 51 3rd Street, an artists’ live/work space in Troy, NY owned by Igor Vamos, internationally recognized artist and leading member of The Yes Men. The event is co-hosted by: Craig Miller, choreographer, dancer, and actor who is the recipient of multiple awards including the BroadwayWorld Chicago award for Best Choreography in a Musical, and the Joseph Jefferson Award for Best Production of a Musical Review; and Simon Ricks, horticulturist, florist, exotic dancer, acrobat, and long-time muse of Betty Vegas.
