Boundary is pleased to present the exhibition You Gotta Be Kidding Me… featuring Stephanie Brooks. Brooks is a Chicago-based visual artist whose work has been shown extensively in the United States and abroad. Brooks makes an assortment of objects, signage, billboards and neon light displays that are deeply engaged with the transformation of language using a range of language-based associations; literary references, prosaic pop-culture phrases, punctuation, emojis and the vernacular. Her sculptural work is produced with the refined materials and clean lines associated with the Bauhaus and Minimalism. Brooks seemingly simple presentation stands in contrast to a range of saccharine, sentimental and curt meanings directly stated by the objects. She heartily embraces humor that can elicit outright laughter or a subtle, knowing smirk from the viewer. In her current body of work, Brooks continues to question and muse about language and symbol reflecting upon the minutiae and larger concepts hidden within our imperfect means of communication.
