@ Compound Yellow
44 Lake Street, Oak Park, IL 60302
Opening Saturday, September 30th, from 12PM - 2PM
Susan Snodgrass, 12:00-2:00 PM, September 30, 2017
Critic Susan Snodgrass surveys the highly individual practice of American architect and designer Ken Isaacs whose populist designs of the 60s and 70s challenged conventional definitions of modernism. Focusing primarily on his Living Structures, DIY modular living units that unified the multiple functions of furniture and home, Snodgrass will discuss Isaacs’ concept of the Matrix, the foundation behind all of the architect’s designs (including his Microhouses and Knowledge Box) that sought radical solutions to the spatial and environmental challenges of modern life.
Susan Snodgrass is a Chicago-based critic and editor of ARTMargins Online. Her current curatorial projects focus on the architecture of Ken Isaacs, and have been included in the exhibitions “Learning Modern,” at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Sullivan Galleries (2009-10), and “Hippie Modernism: The Struggle for Utopia,” organized by the Walker Art Center (2015). She is a Senior Lecturer at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
