Shoot yr Shot: Chronicling the Evolution of Chicago’s Street Art + Culture
@ Rootwork Gallery
645 W 18th Street, Chicago, IL 60616
Opening Friday, August 11th, from 6PM - 10PM
In its first exhibition dedicated to the role of street art in mirroring and mediating the evolution of place, Rootwork Gallery turns over the curatorial reins to celebrated poet and scholar of street art, Kevin Coval; noted public artist and street writer Miguel Aguilar; and multidisciplinary maker, Tara Mahadevan as they weave together a contemporary survey of street art that cements Chicago’s place as one of the world’s leading sites of cultural production, vernacular and otherwise.
Describing the goal of “Shoot yr Shot” as exhibiting the nexus of Chicago’s cultural renaissance — music, fashion, art, etc — through the medium of photography and graffiti, the show will feature original installations by Miguel Aguilar/Kane One alongside photography by some of the city’s most ardent chroniclers of street culture.
