Art as Protest: From Carnival to Chicago
@ DuSable Museum of African American History
740 E 56th Pl, Chicago, IL 60637
Opening Thursday, June 29th, from 7PM - 8:30PM
En Mas’, the new exhibition at the DuSable Museum, positions alternative Carnival and Junkanoo “celebrations” as artistic critiques of gentrification, surveillance, and police brutality in cities like Brooklyn, Kingston, London, among others. While not mentioned in the exhibition, the use of art as protest also has a vibrant presence in Chicago. In this program Andres L. Hernandez, Monica Trinidad from the For the People Artist Collective, and Kristiana Rae Colón from the #LetUsBreathe collective will discuss how they practice art as protest and protest as a form of art.
