RESPECTability is inspired by the “the politics of respectability”, first introduced by Evelyn Brook’s Higginbotham’s book Righteous Discontent, and Aretha Franklin, demanding it when she gets home. RESPECTability asserts that inequity based on identity or lived experience outside the status quo, is violence. What are the social standards in place that often prevent individuals or groups from access to resources and rights?
