Palestinian Comics: Stories from the homeland to the diaspora
@ Build Coffee
6100 S Blackstone Ave, Chicago, IL 60637
Opening Sunday, May 14th, from 5PM - 6PM
Join For the People Artists Collective at Build Coffee for a book talk with renowned Palestinian political cartoonist Mohammad Sabaaneh. Sabaaneh will be joined by FTP member and Palestinian graphic novelist Leila Abdelrazaq. The two of them will discuss their work and how they have used comics and illustration to raise awareness around Palestine and take action against Israel’s occupation and ethnic cleansing.
This event is being held as part of Sabaaneh’s U.S. tour of his new book, White and Black.
MOHAMMAD SABAANEH is a talented political cartoonist from Palestine. He has gained worldwide renown for his stark black-and-white sketches, which draw attention to brutalities of the Israeli occupation and celebrate the Palestinians’ popular resistance. These provocative drawings do not flinch from tackling the tough subjects that confront Palestinians, from Israel’s everyday injustices in the West Bank to their frequent military operations on Gaza. Sabaaneh’s new book, White and Black, includes 180 of Sabaaneh’s best cartoons, some of them depicting the experience of Palestinian political prisoners being held in Israel, as Sabaaneh was due to his cartooning.
LEILA ABDELRAZAQ is a Chicago-born Palestinian author and artist. Her debut graphic novel Baddawi follows the life of her father growing up in a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon during the civil war, and was shortlisted for the 2015 Palestine Book Awards. Her other short comics and illustrations also deal with issues faced by Palestinians in the diaspora. Leila is a core member of For the People Artists Collective.
Books will be available for purchase at the event, and tea and coffee will be available courtesy of Build Coffee for a suggested donation.
