Surreal before there was a word for it, devilishly carnal and alarmingly hellish, the mind-blowing paintings of Dutch artist Hieronymus Bosch inspire controversy, defy interpretation, and foment an institutional tug-of-war in this documentary set on the eve of the 500th anniversary of the artist’s death. Dutch experts set out to organize a commemorative retrospective in the artist’s hometown, but come up against the fact that the bulk of the work is held by foreign museums. Jealousy, territorialism, curatorial intrigues, and tricky art world maneuvers all play a part as expert faces off against expert, and shocking new revelations come to light when the fragile masterpieces undergo minute examination utilizing techniques including X-ray, infrared photography, and multispectrum analysis.
