Pookie (@pookie42 on Instagram) is known for his vintage-style remodeled bikes that he rides around Chicago. With a passion for the creating unique “ratrodbikes” along with his love for graffiti art, he uses Instagram as his outlet to display his creativity on a daily basis. Although this Chicago native uses just an iPhone to capture these shots, there is no doubt in his ability to capture a great photo.
On Friday, July 1st and Saturday, July 2nd from 6-10pm NYCH Gallery invites you to come check out not only the photography, but also the actual bikes, that Pookie creates.
“These bikes are part of my collection. They each have their own name but I consider them “ratrodbikes”. Most of them are antique bicycles that I piece together with other parts. Some old & some new. Sometimes the bicycles have a certain patina to them that I believe gives them character. I sometimes get an idea of what I want the bike to look like & it gradually starts to evolve into something that to me looks cool & is also rideable on the city streets.
Once the bikes are rideable I start an adventure thru my city “Chicago”. I have an admiration for graffiti art and ride around looking for new street art. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting many local artists around the city & enjoy everyone’s different style. Many of the pictures you see were taken while biking around the city.
I believe the bicycles bring a positive vibe to the city. When people see them they like to comment and always start conversations about bikes, city neighborhoods, art and even old memories. It’s alway been a hobby of mine but I would have to say that just as I wait for the bikes to evolve into a kinda rideable art form its evolved into a lifestyle for me…”
