Doug Fogelson: On Climate
@ Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods
21850 Riverwoods Rd, Riverwoods, IL 60015
Opening Sunday, July 31st, from 1PM - 3PM
On view through Sunday, September 4th
In her recent essay on the work of Doug Fogelson, Allison Grant writes that the artist âuses photography to raise critical questions about humankindâs relationship with the natural world.â Indeed, Fogelson doesnât pursue purely aesthetic goals in his work. Rather, he makes images that call attention to some of the most pressing environmental issues of the day, including human-caused climate change and the sixth mass extinction. This solo exhibition brings together two of the artist’s recent photographic projects in addition to a new outdoor installation:
· In Broken Cabinet, Fogelson explores the compulsion to collect, document, and study diverse natural specimens while subtly addressing the roles humans play in facilitating extinction.
· In Creative Destruction, the artist chemically alters photographs of lush landscapes, an act that produces new forms and meanings, reflecting the impacts of human-caused climate change on natural habitats.
· And in the outdoor installation Physis, Fogelson crafts a synthesis of elemental geometry and ephemeral landscapes, exposing the artistâs photographic images to wind, rain, and sunlight, thereby altering the work.
All three projects address the physical impact of human actions on climate and the natural environment, while contemplating the current philosophical âclimateâ surrounding these issues.
Free. No registration required. Exhibition runs through September 4, 2016.
Gallery hours: Monday – Thursday 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., Sundays 1 – 3 p.m. or by appointment.
Doug Fogelson: On Climate was organized by Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods and co-curated by the artist and Franck Mercurio, independent curator at mercurio-exhibits.com.
