At some point in lives, each of us experiences the loss of someone very dear to our hearts. We can’t help but go on missing them. My art is about bringing those nostalgic memories into the space.
The title of ‘The Last Christmas’ involves ‘Ann’, a beautiful woman inside and out. She loved me as if I were her own child even though I was thousands of miles away from home. The story begins with a plan for the last Christmas with Ann and her family to celebrate my college graduation. The theme of this artwork is dedicated to her, she will always be my inspiration.
“It is only with the here that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eyes.” – The Fox from “The Little Prince”
To understand these concepts, I made empty present boxes to show that there is nothing that can replace someone’s dear heart, even valuable and precious things. What I learned from her is that ‘The best way to say thank you is to show your appreciation that comes from the heart.’ From this, I tried to show my invisible appreciation through empty present boxes hoping that my thoughts and prayers could reach to her.
In the process of creating this work, I made present boxes in different sizes to avoid monotony. The curved line of the ribbon portrays the spiritual pathway of my sincere feelings that is trying to stretch out to her.
From this exhibition, I wish my sincerity could touch her once again.
