NO: Works by Chiara No
@ SAMUEL
1917 W Division St.
Opening Saturday, April 30th, from 5PM - 8PM
On view through Monday, May 2nd
NO—a decision, a declaration of control, an invocation of power—a consonant birthing a vowel. Chiara No asserts the power of womanhood in the traditionally male-dominated culture of Metal.
The culture of metal encompasses a fascination with death and an attitude of resistance, yet the rhythmic headbanging of its followers signifies an energetic submission to the music. No’s works represent the dynamism of Metal and female mysticism with symbols of birthing, reproductive organs, and weapons in an aesthetic fusion of the medieval period, horror films, and heavy metal.
