Nyugen E. Smith & Faye Gleisser (Artist Talk)
@ Mana Contemporary Chicago
2233 S. Throop St., Chicago, IL 60608
Opening Sunday, October 18th, from 2PM - 4PM
Please join artist Nyugen Smith and art historian Faye Gleisser (2015-16 Susman Curatorial Fellow, MCA Chicago) for a conversation that develops from their collaborative examination of a question that is key to Smith’s artistic practice: “Where does historical accuracy and fiction intersect in the remembering of one’s past?”
Growing up in Trinidad, Smith was profoundly influenced by the conflation of African cultural practices and the residue of British colonial on the island. Now working out of New Jersey and Chicago, Smith’s densely constructed large scale installations and multi-sensorial performances ask this question in myriad forms and gestures in order to revisit events such as Belgian, Dutch, French, and English occupations in Africa and the Americas, American reconstruction-era politics, racism and revolutionary movements. In dialogue, Smith and Gleisser, an art historian specializing in contemporary art and the spatial politics of race and gender, will discuss Smith’s work and process in relation to art historical discourse and current art practices that similarly engage the stakes of historical inaccuracies and the materiality of memory.
This event is co-produced by Allison Glenn, 2015 Curatorial Resident, and Mana Contemporary Chicago.
