Travis Krupka received his MFA from University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2004. He works in iterative series, building narrative into each construction. Fluctuating between familiar and fantasy his most recent series of collage based paintings focusing on Dutch soccer player Ruud Gullit, drawing on his own experiences playing the sport. The new series is a departure from his Ferraris in a Forest project, but is similarly inclined in vibrance and texture. His heavy application shows Krupka’s tendency towards an optical experience set in the experience of paint as a main focus. This study of images and their representation in paint comes at a moment when non-objective representation is appearing across the country. Krupka relates, yet holds a distinctive position in this matter keeping his abstractions highly illustrative leaning towards design rather than gesture and keeping his characters more geometric than figurative.
