We are proud to present Rebecca Zorach as our next speaker in the Comfort Society series of talks sponsored by Intelligentsia Coffee.
Zorach will give a talk about her research for the future exhibition, ‘South Side Stories: Rethinking Chicago Art, 1960 to 1975,’ to be presented at the DuSable Museum of African American History and the Smart Museum of Art in 2018. She will share the plans for this exhibition on visual art on the South Side of Chicago in the 1960s and 70s, and related research.
A professor of art history, Zorach is the Mary Jane Crowe Chair of the History of Art at Northwestern University. She is a scholar of medieval and Renaissance art, but also curates, teaches and writes on activist art since the 1960s with a particular focus African American artists in Chicago.
Recent publications include articles on the gender and family politics of AfriCOBRA, Claes Oldenburg’s Chicago Picasso lawsuit, and the West Side experimental art center Art & Soul. Her most recent book, ‘Art Against the Law’ (2015), is a collection of essays and conversations on activist art in Chicago since the 1960s.
Previous exhibitions curated by Zorach include exhibitions on early modern European prints and printed books and ‘AFRICOBRA: Philosophy’ at the Logan Center for the Arts (2013).
Comfort Society is a series of talks on anything from the useful to the unexpected. Talks take place Sundays at noon and coffee is served.
