Sometimes it’s important to look out of open windows and yell at the yellow sun and say: “Oh yes, I’m a human!” and “Oh my, there’s a rock!”, but sometimes it’s equally important to leave your window open and wait for the rock to yell back. The title “Y’all and A Rock (me too)”, along with the works in this exhibition, think about the lines drawn around and between the subject/object, living/dead. In the hierarchy of animacy, the human comes first, followed by the animal, then plant, and ending in the inert (the rock) which is seen as lifeless. Picking up the rock from the bottom and holding it at arms length, the work sits on equal ground with the viewer, the artist and the objects themselves. The rock moves from a closed structure and opens wide up. Y’all corrals a group of dynamic subjects and (me too) undercuts dichotomy, throwing the makers into the ring. For this exhibition we invite the construction of relations between you, the work, and the artists. The works shown emanate life that enunciates narratives, identities, and forms of communication between people and things, as well as storytelling and play-acting.
