Michal Samama: Head to Toe

Aspect/Ratio is pleased to present Head to Toe, two special performances from artist Michal Samama.
Head to Toe is a site-specific and time-based performance as it will mark the occasion of the artist entering her 8th month of her first pregnancy. Samama continues her investigations of the temporal and spatial aspects of bodily experience by relating her body to objects and spaces and experimenting with the loss and gain of sovereignty and agency.
While pregnant, the body is confronted with its own instrumentality, as daily activities become more challeng- ing. In its interaction with everyday instruments, confronting and juxtaposing it’s own functionality with theirs, a space between tools and work is interrogated. These body movements, within the gallery space, turn and investigative, as if unconsciously imitating the movement inside.
Israeli born artist, Michal Samama is currently an MFA candidate at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the recipient of SAIC New Artist Society Award. Her work was recently commissioned by The Chocolate Factory in New York which was reviewed in The New York Times. Other recent shows include: Curtain Up Fes- tival in Tel Aviv; EXPO 2014, Rapid Pulse 2014 and TBSO3 at Defibrillator, 6018 North in Chicago. And, in New York, at New York Live Arts, Movement Research at Judson Church, Performance Mix Festival, Dixon Place, Joyce SoHo, CPR, Chez Bushwick, Priska C. Juschka Gallery, 92nd Street Y.
