Each month the Illinois Artisans Program highlights a juried Illinois Artisan, who stands out at an example of the excellence in Fine Craft in Illinois. This month we are highlighting photographer Chris Main of Champaign, Illinois. A longtime resident of Southern Illinois, Chris Main is a conservationist and photographer who focuses on the beauty found right here in Illinois.

“I hope to motivate others to visit some of these treasures. I believe it is only by immersing oneself in the landscape that one comes to love the land and care about it’s preservation. Short of this, people have difficulty comprehending the awe-factor that the natural world offers. This is part of the power and purpose of landscape photography: to cause people to want to experience and save what is left of our native landscape.”

Main is drawn to the Illinois State Park network: the wetlands, waterfalls, forests and ravines. Trained on film and then switching to digital, Main’s highly detailed work is the result of technical training. That coupled with patience. Main will visits a site over and over again, in order to be there during just the right light, wind conditions and season. The exhibition highlight’s Chris’ hours of effort to photograph the Illinois landscape. Visitors to the exhibit can pick up a few tips on taking better nature photographs and a list of her favorite sites in Illinois to start planning your road trips.
