Scott Wolniak: Fields
@ Valerie Carberry Gallery
875 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 3860, Chicago IL
Opening Friday, April 4th, from 6PM - 8PM
On view through Thursday, May 1st
Valerie Carberry Gallery is pleased to announce Fields, an exhibition of recent work by Scott Wolniak. On view will be a selection from two parallel studio projects, graphite drawings and carved plaster tablets, both transformative in material and labored in process.
Using landscape photographs as source material, Wolniakâs drawings are built from multiple layers of meditative mark makingâa slow, additive process by which the landscape image eventually yields to the act of drawing itself, subverting the practice of representation.
By contrast, Wolniakâs slabs of cast plaster are subjected to a reduction of material. Carved, incised and chiseled before they are painted and stained, Wolniakâs tablets are a hybrid of painting, drawing and sculpture.
Fields will be Wolniakâs first solo exhibition with the gallery. An illustrated brochure with essay by arts writer Claudine IseÌ is available. IseÌ describes Wolniakâs paintings and drawings as â…capable of open[ing] our eyes to multiple ways of seeing by collapsing site, process and sphere of inquiry into a single, infinitely complex visual field.â The artistâs work has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Art Institute of Chicago; Chicago Cultural Center; Hyde Park Art Center; and at galleries in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, among others.
