UIC MFA Open Studios

@ Art & Exhibition Hall

400 S Peoria St., Chicago IL

Opening Saturday, November 9th, from 3PM - 5:30PM

“Sometimes a nicer sculpture is to be able to provide a living for your family.”
-Ben Kinmont, 1998–ongoing

Join us for a gathering of prominent artists, educators, dealers, and collectors to share visions of possible futures for an ecology of art and economics. Guests are invited to take the microphone and engage in a poetic and political exchange on the future of economies, artists, and the practices of art making.

“Being good in business is the most fascinating kind of art. Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art. “
-Andy Warhol

Art can open up space in dialogue for imagined realities as well as practical strategies. We hope that people will share utopian or post-utopian musings, personal experiences, propose alternative creative economies for the 21st century, and instigate new ways of thinking about the issues surrounding art and economies.

“Marcel Duchamp worked as a librarian and later sold Brancusi’s work to make a living, while refusing to be dependent on sales of his own work.”
-Anton Vidokle, Art without Market, Art without Education: Political Economy of Art

Situated as a precursor to Open Studios at the University of Illinois at Chicago, we invite you to visit, share, and discuss these issues while meeting emerging artists from the UIC Masters of Fine Arts graduate program.
