The Art of Description exhibition takes a cue from Mark Doty’s book The Art of Description, (Graywolf Press, 2010)—a book dedicated to descriptive writing in all its rich and enthralling exactitude. His question, how do we put the world in words? Doty suggests that poetic description is our diligent, continuous, subjective participation in the process of living—something that says as much about us as it does about what is shown.
‘The artist selected‘, says exhibition curator Doug Stapleton, ‘came to mind while reading Doty’s book. All of them take on the clamoring world a distinctive and singular voice. What I perceive in common is a quiet and evocative economy, diligence to the singular moment, and an allowance for our own interpretation to reside in the work.’
