ANDREW RAFACZ is pleased to announce Annie Lapin, John Lehr, Alon Levin, Philip Vanderhyden, a group exhibition of painting, photography, and installation in Gallery One.

Chicago, IL, November 16, 2013– ANDREW RAFACZ continues the fall 2013 season with Annie Lapin, John Lehr, Alon Levin, Philip Vanderhyden. The exhibition continues through Saturday, January 11, 2014.

Each of the four artists surveyed in this exhibition is concerned, in part, with the relationship between immediacy and indeterminacy of materials, image, and surface.

Annie Lapin presents a new painting that continues her interest in the conventions of representation and expressive, gestural abstraction. For Lapin, the ‘specters’ of realism haunt her paintings, creating layers of imagery that are at once mysterious yet inherently relatable.

John Lehr presents recent atmospheric photographs with surfaces that are the result of physical manipulations at their conception and subjective rendering of color in their final production. They begin in a decidedly real context but end up as abstractions of something re-imagined. The artist’s editorial distance preserves each image’s relationship to the unknown.

Alon Levin primarily works in installation, creating ordered systems, often from simple, elemental materials. Here, we present a recent work that combines wooden sawhorses and stacked Styrofoam sheets into something wholly conceived but strangely familiar.

Philip Vanderhyden presents two new paintings that address his continued interest in surface and process. These new works are meant to conflict a primal way of making with a final result that looks indirect or even fake. At first view they may be simple and elegant, but reveal something more vulgar and potentially sinister.
