Laura Davis: Unknown Pleasures
@ Chicago Artists Coalition
217 N. Carpenter Street, Chicago, IL 60607
Opening Friday, May 10th, from 6PM - 9PM
On view through Thursday, May 30th
For her solo exhibition, BOLT Resident Laura Davis presents Unknown Pleasures—a title taken from the 1979 Joy Division album of the same name, which in turn was taken from a line in Marcel Proust’s Remembrance of Things Past. In Unknown Pleasures, Davis uses furniture and jewelry as the foundation for her sculptures, creating tension between a viewer’s imagined and actual experience with her objects (which play a dual role themselves). The role of a lush and stylish sofa is used for comforting one in anguish, rather than as a sign of style and decor. Unhinged necklaces with clay handles are displayed as potential weapons, the suggested aggression of which poses the question: are we to attack or defend?
There will be an opening reception on Friday, May 10, 2013, and the exhibition will run through May 30, 2013
