@ Thomas Robertello Gallery
17 N Morgan, Chicago IL 60607
Opening Friday, April 12th, from 6PM - 8PM
On view through Saturday, June 8th
Thomas Robertello Gallery is pleased to present Swing: an exhibition of new work by John Delk. This is the artist’s third solo exhibition with the gallery. The opening reception is Friday April 12, 6:00 – 8:00 PM.
Swing is an installation of sculpture, photography, and video. Themes of dematerialization and transformation are combined with celebration, sensuality, and romance. The resulting work traverses a path of many forms and media.
âMoon Riverâ is a sound sculpture. Snaking its way through the gallery on sand and shattered glass, wires and speakers babble with seventy-nine different renditions of the song âMoon River.â
âSwingâ is a series of prints created using pornographic Internet videos. In these abstracted painterly landscapes, subjects appear to float, drown, and evaporate.
âThe Ball Droppingâ is a video installation of the New Year’s Eve ball dropping in Times Square from 1977 to 2013. In a thread that stretches from floor to ceiling, looping videos arranged sequentially present an unbroken record of ecstatic moments.
âOâ is a suspended block of ice gradually melting above a heat source and evaporating. âTrophiesâ are a series of sculptures created using commonplace glass materials, which have been delicately balanced, left subject to falling and breaking. Similarly, âStargazers,â an installation of lilies, will bloom and decay over the two-month period of the exhibition.
Newburgh, New York-based artist John Delk received an MFA from the School of the Art Institute Chicago in 2001 and has exhibited in New York, San Francisco, Washington, DC, and Chicago. He is the recipient of a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts.
