CHICAGO, IL. The Student Union Galleries (SUGs) is pleased to introduce our Spring 2013 season of student exhibitions with Severe Style, opening Thursday, January 24 at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s (SAIC) LeRoy Neiman Center Gallery. Curated by SUGs Directors Rob Bos and Stephanie Cristello, both of which are currently enrolled in the Painting and Drawing Department at SAIC, the exhibtion reimagines Classical theories and tropes in painting, proposing new, contemporary methods of image construction.
Severe Style features six contemporary painters that through respective practices and stylistic means, have returned to classical forms as a source for production, both formally and ideologically. Where the idyllic and the illusionistic overlap, exists a current trend in painting that adopts the Romantic myth of high style, sometimes in a way that is purposefully illogical. Symmetry, trompe l’oeil, text forms, and an attention to the physical and conceptual implications of composition and influence, suggest new ways to see “style” in painting today—like a ripple in the scattered reflections of Narcissus’s mirror when the wind blew.
