Love Under Funnel Cake and Vengaboys is Space Club HQ’s 2nd floor exhibition running through the month of January that showcases works of art that celebrate life in all of its quirky, weird and beautiful glory.
“One of the most perpetuated art myths is that of the tortured artist, alone in his studio, slaving away. Genius may only be birthed at the height of isolation and psychological torment, at least according to the accepted folklore. But is there not more to it? Are there not instances of joy, happiness, surprise, even jubilation in the process of art making? Must art be existentially tortured in order to be “good”? Are “fun” and “art” mutually exclusive entities?
Love Under Funnel Cake and Venga Boys is a show that seeks to debunk these myths. It features the work of artists who proudly fly in the face of convention and who defy the concept of art-making as a tortuous, labored process. It showcases artwork that examines life with intelligence and sensitivity, yet also celebrates it in all of its quirky, weird and beautiful glory.
The sculptor Erwin Wurm once said, “If you approach things with a sense of humor, people immediately assume you’re not to be taken seriously. But I think truths about society and human existence can be approached in different ways. You don’t always have to be deadly serious. Sarcasm and humor can help you see things in a lighter vein.” So let us give existential torment a break for the evening and instead revel in the wonderful discovery that is art and the process of making it. Let us remember that there are two sides of every coin, and recognize that joy is just as much a part of life as anguish.”
