DOCUMENT is pleased to present Dedication to this View by New York based artist Georgia Wall. The exhibition features a single channel video and three silkscreen prints on found magazine clippings. Together the works in the exhibition weave together a series of sources where the subjectivity of the artist/performer/editor emerges as the constant and is continually projected into the frame of both original and found footage.
Dedication to this View is a meditative work addressing themes of distance, concealment, sexuality and the act of viewing. The informal performances and occurrences of day-to-day life that are chronicled in the video are abutted by altered footage from historical film and performance art. The majority of the material was shot with an iPhone, at times entering into the realm of the diaristic and banal, producing a video that acknowledges the tool of its production. The work holds a visual relationship to the audio, which comes in and out, bleeding across it’s fragmented frames. While viewing the piece from the beginning it develops gradually, allowing for a curious state of suspense over its duration.
Georgia Wall (b. 1986, New York, NY) lives and works in New York, creating video and performance work through a multi-disciplinary practice that considers the act of viewing, and the generative space created through distance and concealment. She received her BA from Oberlin College in 2008 and her MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2011. Wall has shown work nationally in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and abroad in Canada, Italy and Turkey.
