Deconstructing The Classroom, Reconstructing The Queer is a collective exhibition of artists from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago community enrolled in the course Queering Spaces, instructed by Oli Rodriguez.
Through this show we investigate the intersectionality of race, class and gender by deconstructing social systems of dominance, power and sex. The Queering Spaces collective reconstructs and explores non-heteronormative perspectives with critique applied twofold: as an assessment of the artworks within the exhibition and as a way to “call out” the inequalities of heteronormative society. As an extension of The Great Refusal: Taking On New Queer Aesthetics at Sullivan Galleries, this show serves additionally in finding spaces of power for queerness.
Featuring Work By: Stephania Dulowski, Katerina Gailas, Katya Hervatin, Kiam Marcelo Junio, Rosalina Perez, Wendy Marie Purse, Nicole Ricket, Hannah Rodriguez, Ali Scott, Aziza Slater-Sandoval and Oli Rodriguez
