Thad Kellstadt’s work is motivated by an effort to understand his own past as well as a desire to reconcile vivid memories with imagined scenarios. Impossible contradictions and unfamiliar associations are enacted on the surface of his painting. We are presented with a blend of the profane and the exalted, where commonplace and banal household objects take on symbolic importance. Atmospheres and characters in Kellstadt’s work come from a range of times and aesthetic associations. This is both a world stripped of will and a promise of a new future.

One Strange Bird is a unique boutique featuring handmade gifts, apparel, and art in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood. The store carries exquisitely crafted, brazenly unique art, clothing, accessories, home decor, and bath and body products by local and national artists. The space also features art workshops in many techniques taught by local artistic talent. Run by an artist, One Strange Bird seeks to foster a dialogue between process and product by featuring an on-site studio where customer can watch artists create while they shop.
