FOOL is a solo exhibition featuring new work (play) by Chicago-based artist, David Sprecher. Since his graduation from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2006, Sprecher’s printmaking background has blossomed into a full-blown multimedia investigation of perception. His impressively prolific practice has recently migrated off of wood panels and directly onto the walls and floors, where he screws, slices, draws and weaves, playing with perspective and challenging outdated ideas of art as object. His clever use of non-art materials – from yarn to magnets to razorblades – promotes a fluidity in the work that is central to his philosophy of art as play.
Since the beginning of 2012 Sprecher has immersed himself in his practice, working (playing) in the studio fifty to sixty hours a week. Having ample time to create has introduced a flexibility and lightness to his process. The temporary nature of his recent installations has freed Sprecher to experiment vigorously, discovering several large-scale pieces a week. Sprecher moved his practice into the Peanut Gallery in mid-March and has been working (playing) daily to transform the space. The exhibition will serve as documentation of his discoveries and a chance to inhabit his process. It will be fun.
