Artist Bio:
Rebecca George is currently teaching at, and recently received her MFA from, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She received her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and also has an MS degree from the Spertus Institute. Recent Exhibitions of her work include the Noyes Art Center in Evanston; Fine Arts Building Gallery, Chicago; Roxaboxen, Chicago; First Street Gallery, New York; and Sullivan Galleries, School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is the recipient of several awards and scholarships.

About her work, George writes:
“The longing to escape the limitations of life is the longing for freedom. My recent work is about exploring the implications of domestic captivity of animals as a metaphor for the underlying issues of limitation.
Animals disarm the ego, being themselves; not acting, but being. Without a self-image, life acts through animals without reservation. Closely observing animals allows all that separates us to fall away. It is a powerful doorway into the natural state of being.”

**portage ARTspace was founded by artist and art educator Johannah Silva in July,2010, out of her home in Portage Park, Chicago. The space was initially conceived as a year-long curatorial project and artistic experiment in which she would curate invited artists into solo shows, theme-based shows, and co-curated shows with invited curators in an effort to create artistic dialogue and build community. The year-long adventure concluded this past July, showcasing five diverse exhibits during its run. This current show by Rebecca George is an extension of the project space – portage ARTspace, Part II if you will – in which Johannah hopes to continue to curate exhibits on a bi-annual basis as well as carry on other additional artistic projects as new ideas and inspiration arise.
