The Mission is pleased to present Oye Chica!, an exhibition of the female form.
The female figure is perhaps the most significant theme in art history. Throughout the ages, artists have poetically depicted the female form to express heartfelt and culturally universal concepts of love, beauty, femininity, sexuality and desire, and to metaphorically represent abstracted concepts of nature, politics, and the issues of everyday life.
Oye Chica!, includes a diverse range of artists spanning the 20th century as well as currently practicing contemporary artists, but the show is by no means an exhaustive survey; there are many notable exceptions – Picasso, Schiele, De Kooning and many others. Oye Chica! is an exhibition that pays homage to a few of the many artists that have consistently explored the female form in their work. The survey investigates a diverse range of media utilized to accentuate varying concepts. From traditional figure studies in graphite and watercolor to impasto painting and hand woven textiles, all of the pieces possess a unique and individual perspective while maintaining their unity through the common theme.
