The Riverside Arts Center is pleased to present Kelli Connell and Betsy Odom in Parallel Play.
Kelli Connell and Betsy Odom have been together for 7 years, married for two. They share both home and studio. While their work is not collaborative, it’s made in crooked parallel with intersections, rhymes and overlaps. This show is about their mutual brainstorming. Both artists work prolifically in sketchbooks. Kelli “sketches” with small contact prints (some of Betsy) and copious notes-to-self, lists of things to do, things she might do, work she would be doing if she could be doing it at that very moment, as well as meticulous charts, graphs and other homemade organizational systems all meant to
working life. Betsy’s sketchbooks contain drawings of future sculptures, the plotting of structures, the occasional photograph (at times taken by Kelli of Betsy) as well as whimsical drawings, particularly two repeatedly appearing dancing thumb prints that Betsy says stand for nothing and Kelli says stand for the two of them. In the spirit of conversation they’ve designed their show around this mutual creative process, their shared lives and shared studio practice. We’re invited to peruse the original sketchbooks, as well as over a thousand sketchbook pages reproduced and displayed to reflect the on-going conversation and non-conversation between these two artists.
