Mark Booth: GOD IS REPRESENTED BY THE SEA
@ ADDS DONNA
4223 W Lake St, 422, Chicago, IL 60624
Opening Sunday, April 10th, from 3PM - 7PM
On view through Sunday, May 15th
Mark Booth’s practice incorporates sound, writing, painting, drawing, performance, and installation. Much of his work employs fragments of speech, urging viewers to listen, regardless of whether the work is spoken or written.
In GOD IS REPRESENTED BY THE SEA, Booth’s vivid verbal imagery materializes through an assortment of media including hand-cut wall texts, drawings, and recorded voice. The scrawling vinyl wall texts, though immersive in themselves, demand more than mere reading. Due to their interaction with the gallery’s architecture, walking, bending, turning and craning become as much a part of the reading experience as the words themselves.
Beyond exposing the plurality of language, Booth offers breaks and pauses, clearing entrances to join in the process of reading. Each entry point becomes a story as elements of the exhibition overlap to create an experience of language that is at once physical and abstract.
