Ian Pedigo: A Mouth Which Shouts is a Cave for the Hand
@ 65GRAND
1369 W Grand Ave, Chicago, IL 60642
Opening Friday, April 8th, from 7PM - 10PM
On view through Saturday, May 7th
The exhibition’s title, A Mouth Which Shouts is a Cave for the Hand, refers to a quote by Johann Gottfried von Herder regarding tactility in Neo-classical sculpture – the sense of touch makes an art object more prone to inciting a sense of gruesomeness or disgust as opposed to a purely visual sensation.
Pedigo‘s current body of work is concerned with how a mental picture, or a conception of an idea, disintegrates when it takes form as a physical object. Pedigo describes it as “the struggle between the retainable image and the effort to produce a material artifact.” In these latest pieces, the artist has expanded his repertoire of found material to include photographic reproductions as discrete objects. His interest lies with memory and outmoded means of mechanical printing as it relates to the “degradation of physical structure.” At the same time elemental materials such as bone pigments and basalt rocks-gestures toward the ritualistic-are combined with everyday, common and domestic items.
