Basement Show
@ Parking Space
1100 N Damen Ave, Chicago, IL 60622
Opening Friday, September 24th, from 6PM - 10PM
On view through Thursday, September 30th
We (PARKING SPACE) are accepting the amalgamated aesthetics of punk, goth and related cultural phenomena as a dominant aesthetic style of contemporary art in 2010.
We suggest that the combination of punk, goth and related cultural phenomena and the deterioration of these aesthetics over time have devalued their collective histories and meanings in 2010. We believe that in 2010 the commitment to the visual aesthetic of punk, goth… and related cultural phenomena supersedes the commitment to the social history of punk, goth and related cultural phenomena in declaring the meaning of such ideas.
We would also like to add that even the suggestion of relating these ideas in an Art context in 2010 renders punk, goth and related cultural phenomena meaningless.
We instead propose placing objects of formal and modernist construction in a context where punk, goth and related cultural phenomena become active, coalescing objects with various histories into a singular history unified by aesthetic and contextual similitude.
Featuring works in a basement by Brandon Warren Alvendia, Caroline Polachek, Daniel Sullivan, Eleni Ann Kelaidis, Justin Thomas Schaefer, Marion Ramos, Michael Thibault, Scott Reeder and Tyson Reeder.
