Join Jane Addams Hull-House Museum for a workshop led by featured “Participatory Arts” Hull-House artist Regin Igloria, founder of North Branch Projects – an organization that approaches community building through bookbinding practices, collective story writing and community archiving.

In this workshop, participants will collaborate to create hand-bound books from simple and recycled materials. The workshop is designed for slowing down, sharing stories, and connecting with one another. You are also helping to create a neighborhood archive that will highlight community voices.

This workshop is inspired by the work of Hull-House co-founder, Ellen Gates Starr (1859—1940), who established the original Hull-House Bookbindery (ca.1899), advocated for fair labor and union organizing, championed craft, and ran for Alderwomen of the 19th Ward in 1916. Several original books bound by Starr and Igloria’s project, “Everything on Wheels“ are featured in the current exhibition, “Participatory Arts: Crafting Social Change.”

FREE WITH RSVP! REFRESHMENTS SERVED!
All ages welcome with supervision.
Workshops involve the use of needles and thread. No prior experience necessary. All backgrounds and abilities welcome! Workshops are located in Hull-House’s historic Resident’s Dining Hall that is wheelchair accessible. Be ready to slow down, make books together, share food and conversation and enjoy!

Regin Igloria is a multi-disciplinary artist and bookbinder from Chicago’s Albany Park neighborhood. His studio community fosters an open approach to sharing work with new audiences and encourages collaboration and integration. Igloria is also the founder of North Branch Projects (NBP), an independent, artist-run project that offers community-based bookbinding and provides outlets for exploring the creative process in places where few resources exist for the arts. He uses bookbinding in an inclusive setting to encourage dialogue, collaboration and community building.

North Branch Projects (NBP) uses the book arts as a community organizing tool. NBP was founded 2010 and was originally located in the business district of the Albany Park neighborhood. The Lawrence Avenue storefront occupied 1500 square feet with exhibition and studio rental spaces located in the rear. With overhead costs preventing the continuation and progress of the project, the move to make North Branch Projects more mobile became a necessity. The storefront closed in November 2014 and now operates on a pop-up basis, with the “Everything on Wheels” project leading the charge. NBP participates in local street festivals throughout the year and continues to provide workshops and classes.

Jane Addams Hull-House Museum (JAHHM) draws upon the legacy of international peace activist and feminist, Jane Addams, and other social reformers who worked, alongside their immigrant neighbors, to create social change on the Near West Side of Chicago during the Progressive Era. The Museum preserves and develops the original Hull-House site for the interpretation and continuation of the historic settlement house vision. Exhibitions and public programs elevate histories of activism, progressive education and democratic principles of participation and exchange, and connect them to present-day social justice issues.

“Participatory Arts: Crafting Social Change” and “Participatory Arts: Artist Workshops” is part of Art Design Chicago, an initiative of the Terra Foundation for American Art exploring Chicago’s art and design legacy, with presenting partner The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation. Participatory Arts is funded by the Terra Foundation for American Art and The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation. With so many political changes and social challenges, it can be easy to disconnect from one another. Strengthening community ties helps us to organize for the change we want to see.

Join Jane Addams Hull-House Museum for a bookbinding workshop led by featured Hull-House artist Regin Igloria, founder of North Branch Projects, an organization that approaches community building through bookbinding practices, collective story writing and community archiving. In the workshop, book-making is a learning tool for slowing down, finding voice, sharing stories and connecting with one another. Your participation will become a collection of voices that create a neighborhood archive, offering a glimpse into the values that are important to you and your neighbors. The workshop is inspired by the work of Hull-House co-founder Ellen Gates Starr (1859—1940) who established the Hull-House Bookbindery (ca.1899) and advocated for fair labor and union organizing. Ten books bound by Starr and Igloria’s project “Everything on Wheels“ is featured in the current exhibition, Participatory Arts: Crafting Social Change on view through May 3, 2019.

FREE WITH RSVP! REFRESHMENTS SERVED! All ages welcome with supervision. Be ready to slow down, make books together, share food and conversation, and enjoy! No prior experience necessary. Workshops involve the use of needles and thread. All backgrounds and abilities welcome! Workshops are located in Hull-House’s historic Resident’s Dinning Hall that is wheelchair accessible.

Featured Artist and Community Partner
Regin Igloria is a multi-disciplinary artist and bookbinder from Chicago’s Albany Park neighborhood. His studio community fosters an open approach to sharing work with new audiences and encourages collaboration and integration. Igloria is also the founder of North Branch Projects (NBP), an independent, artist-run project that offers community-based bookbinding and provides outlets for exploring the creative process in places where few resources exist for the arts. Through his art, he uses bookbinding to encourage dialogue between people in an inclusive setting, making it possible for ideas to have a positive impact on society.

The storefront closed in November 2014 and now operates on a pop-up basis, with the Everything on Wheels project leading the charge. NBP participates in local street festivals throughout the year and continues to provide workshops and classes.

Participatory Arts: Crafting Social Change at Hull-House is part of Art Design Chicago, an initiative of the Terra Foundation for American Art exploring Chicago’s art and design legacy, with presenting partner The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation. Participatory Arts is funded by the Terra Foundation for American Art and The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation. The Chicago Community Trust has also provided generous support.

The post What Binds Your Community? This hybrid performance and workshop gathering will amass readings, writings, and thoughts about divisiveness and how it pertains to personal modes of understanding, which will ultimately be documented into a series of artists’ books.

The event will take place on Saturday, March 10 at 1PM. Lasting for approximately one hour, invited guests will take turns presenting a reading of their choice. Entries will be found or written by the presenter and selected for personal reasons and limited to approximately five minutes each. Guests will also be asked to respond to each other’s reading on a sheet of paper with writing or drawing. At the end of each presentation, the responses will be collected and bound into a book.

North Branch Projects will maintain the collection in an archive and present similar gatherings at other venues throughout the year.

The post Bringing Together What Wants to Come Apart first appeared on The Visualist.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">78520</post-id>

The Tip of My Tongue

Meg Duguid

Exhibition

Reception

Andy Moore

Chicago

Hương Ngô

Judith Brotman

Kirsten Leenaars

Near North Side

North Branch Projects

The Chicago Literacy Alliance

Udita Upadhyaya

Weinberg/Newton Gallery

The Tip of My Tongue is organized in partnership with the Chicago Literacy Alliance and aims to draw out the complexities of language as a tool not only for communication but also for connection, discovery, and growth. This group exhibition takes an expansive approach to the theme of literacy as it explores the many issues caught up in the web of words we each navigate, from notions of identity and belonging, to the reciprocal relationship between reader and writer. Through sound, color, book arts, and text, this group of works by six Chicago-based artists provides access points to a multiplicity of voices, ideas, viewpoints, and conversations.

Artists: Judith Brotman, Kirsten Leenaars, Andy Moore, Huong Ngô, North Branch Projects, and Udita Upadhyaya

Weinberg/Newton Gallery aims to create space for dialogue about the many social justice issues that concern our local Chicago community and beyond. In collaboration with artists and non-profit organizations, we work together to cultivate a culture of consciousness and inspire change by way of exhibitions, panel discussions, film screenings, artist talks, and more.

The Chicago Literacy Alliance is an association of more than 100 organizations helping to meet literacy needs for people of all ages and backgrounds. It is dedicated to a mission of increasing the combined impact of the Chicago community’s literacy organizations by providing opportunities for creative and effective collaboration. Working together, the CLA and its members collectively envision a 100% literate Chicago.

The post The Tip of My Tongue first appeared on The Visualist.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">75881</post-id>

DIY Journals: Bookbinding Workshop

Meg Duguid

workshop

Bookbinding

Chicago

Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art

North Branch Projects

Regin Igloria

West Town

Workshops

In this three-hour workshop, you will learn basic book binding techniques to get started in the book arts. What is of value to you? What might you put a price on? Or what is it that can never be sold?

This project is a collaboration between the general public, Albany Park locals, and artists working with North Branch Projects. The work presents some thoughts on individual and societal values, which will be collected and gathered in various ways, from email to written notes to verbal correspondences. As part of the ongoing neighborhood archive in the bindery, a book will be specifically devoted to the collection of responses and will continue to be collected beyond the run of the exhibition.

Along with the book, everyone is also invited to create price signs in response to those questions. Artists are asked to consider a format similar to the colorful signs used by local grocery stores and shops in the neighborhood. How could one alter, modify, or re-direct the meaning of value using similar (or not-so-similar) design tactics? How would they get the attention of passersby on the busy street of Lawrence Avenue? The signs will be displayed in the storefront windows and the studio walls for the duration of Chicago Artists’ Month, October 2011, through November 19.
A separate booklet/catalogue will be published with a listing of all the responses as well as images of the artists’ designs. Catalogues will be made available for purchase to help fund bookbinding workshops for residents of Albany Park.

The post Core Values first appeared on The Visualist.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">9702</post-id>
