They will discuss how nationalism, rather than internationalism, came to ensnare world politics in the early twentieth century.

Before World War I, enthusiasm for a borderless world seemed to be gaining traction. And yet a backlash against globalization was growing. As the war progressed, air escaped from the globalist balloon in the United States and across Europe, where war and disease led to mass societal upheaval.

Against the World will be available for purchase in the Newberry Bookshop, as will Dr. Boyle’s recent book, The Shattering: America in the 1960s. Both authors will sign books after the program.

The post Against the World: Anti-Globalism and Mass Politics Between the World Wars first appeared on The Visualist.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">139531</post-id>

Chicago and Civil Rights in the 1960s

Meg Duguid

Talk

Chicago

Chicago and Civil Rights in the 1960s

Clayborne Carson

Kevin Boyle

Near North Side

Newberry Library

Virtual event – register now Open to the Public This program will be held virtually on Zoom. Instead, he came up against an old city determined to protect its color lines. At the movement’s defining march in August 1966, white Chicagoans battered protesters with bottles, bricks, and cherry bombs, and Dr. King was struck by a rock.

King’s Chicago campaign occurred at the middle of a tumultuous decade shaped by competing visions of American society.

In this installment of “Conversations at the Newberry,” Kevin Boyle and Clayborne Carson, two historians who have studied the civil rights movement, the United States during the 1960s, and the life of Dr. King, will discuss the troubling history of this era and reflect on its continuing impact over the past half century.

“Conversations at the Newberry” is generously sponsored by Sue and Melvin Gray.

Your generosity is vital in keeping the library’s programs, exhibitions, and reading rooms free and accessible to everyone. Make a donation today.

The post Chicago and Civil Rights in the 1960s first appeared on The Visualist.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">128448</post-id>
