Like the artists in the exhibition, these filmmakers use a variety of means to create their visually rich and dynamic abstract imagery. Influential New Zealand abstract filmmaker Len Lye uses a rayograph technique with textured cloth and stencils in Color Cry. José Antonio Sistiaga handpaints directly on the film strip for Impressions En Haute Atmosphère, and Bärbel Neubauer uses a number of direct animation techniques for Firehouse. Josh Lewis treats the film with chemicals to degrade and alter it in Doubt #2. Barbara Lattanzi’s Music for Voices is also chemically treated, and then digitized thirty years later. For Landfill 16, Jennifer Reeves buried outtakes from a previous project and then handpainted the partially decomposed footage. In Sunset Strip, Kayla Parker uses magnolia petals, net stocking, lacquer, and ink to push her time-lapse footage of 365 sunsets past the natural to a more artificial aesthetic. In As Water Is in Water, a collaborative work with musician Tashi Wada, Madison Brookshire (appearing in person) digitizes and loops strips of film that had been soaked in paint. Collectively, these works offer a tantalizing glimpse at the expressive possibilities of the moving image.
(FREE)

Color Cry (Len Lye, 1952, USA, 16mm, 3 min.)
Impressions En Haute Atmosphère (José Antonio Sistiaga, 1989, Spain, 35mm, 7 min.)
Doubt #2 (Josh Lewis, 2013, USA, 16mm, 5 min.)
Landfill 16 (Jennifer Reeves, 2010-2011, USA, 16mm, 9 min.)
Sunset Strip (Kayla Parker, 1996, UK, 35mm, 3 min.)
Music For Voices (Barbara Lattanzi, 1979/2009, USA, digital, 7 min.)
Firehouse (Bärbel Neubauer, 1998, Germany, 16mm, 5 min.)
As Water Is in Water (Madison Brookshire and Tashi Wada, 2017, USA, digital, 31 min.)
In Person: Madison Brookshire

Image: As Water Is in Water

The post Experiments in Form: Cameraless, Hand-Painted and Abstract Films first appeared on The Visualist.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">79982</post-id>

A ROLL FOR PETER

Meg Duguid

Screening

16mm

A ROLL FOR PETER

Amanda Katz

artist in attendance

Audrey Turner

Cassandra Bull

Chicago

Cityscape

collaboration

Daryl Meador

Dave Rodriguez

David Gatten

Documentary

Dominic Angerame

dual projection

Eric Theise

Eve Heller

Experimental

Fern Silva

film

G. Twenty-plus former students, colleagues, and admirers of Peter Hutton answered an invitation to shoot A ROLL FOR PETER. The parameters were simple: shoot a single 100 foot roll of 16mm black and white reversal film. The rolls are strung together with black leader separating the rolls, as Peter often separated the single shots in his films. Organized and assembled by Jennifer Reeves and Mark Street, and set on tour thanks to the energies of Eric Theise, this series of pieces speaks to Peter’s strong contemplative aesthetic ethos. Each filmmaker has 2 minutes and 47 seconds of screen time to commune with Peter’s memory, and the collected rolls become more than the sum of their parts.

The organizers write, “Peter Hutton’s contemplative, visually arresting landscape and urban films invite us to take our time within silent cinematic tableaux of place, so that we may discover the beauty of overlooked moments. His carefully composed long-duration shots, whether of city, nature, sea or factory, remind us of the wonder we can discover in the familiar. As we observe with patience, humility and vulnerability, Peter’s work offers us a sanctuary from the frantic, goal oriented state of current visual culture.”

Program Details:

A Roll for Peter (2016)
16mm and 16mm x 2, black & white, silent, 60 minutes

Participating Filmmakers:
Dominic Angerame, Roddy Bogawa, Cassandra Bull, Jacob Burckhardt, Jesse Cain, David Gatten, Richard Max Gavrich, George Griffin, Eve Heller, Mott Hupfel, Nikolas Jaeger, Amanda Katz & Josh Lewis, Theodore Rex King, Robbie Land, rebecca (marks) leopold, Paul Marcus, Daryl Meador, Mary Beth Reed, Jennifer Reeves, Dave Rodriguez, Peter Rose, Lynne Sachs, Josephine Shokrian, Fern Silva & students, Jordan Stone, Mark Street, G.
